Traffic and driving law in Udon Thani

Traffic law is the law most Udon Thani residents meet most often, usually at a checkpoint or after a minor bump — here is how it actually works.

Licensing

• An International Driving Permit only covers short visits; residents — including long-stay foreigners — are expected to hold a Thai driving licence, obtained at the provincial Transport Office after a written test, practical test and, for a first licence, an eye and reaction check.
• Some nationalities can convert a valid foreign licence with less testing; requirements change, so confirm the current process at the Udon Thani Transport Office rather than relying on secondhand accounts.
• Driving without a valid licence complicates any subsequent insurance claim as well as exposing the driver to a separate fine.

The rules that get enforced

• Helmets for motorcycle riders and passengers, and seatbelts in cars, are legally required and are among the most commonly enforced rules at checkpoints.
• Drink-driving is measured by blood-alcohol limit, with a stricter, lower limit for newer and younger drivers than for the general limit — treat any drinking-and-driving as an unacceptable risk rather than checking where the exact line falls.
• Mobile phone use while driving and speed limits, which vary by road type, are both actively enforced, with fines payable at the station or, increasingly, by mailed ticket linked to vehicle registration.

After an accident

1. Stop, check for injuries, and call the police for anything beyond a trivial bump.
2. Exchange insurance details; do not sign a Thai-language admission of fault you cannot read, however much pressure there is to “settle now.”

When a traffic matter becomes criminal

Careless or reckless driving that causes injury or death, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence causing harm are prosecuted as criminal offences through the ordinary process described in criminal matters — not just handled as an insurance matter. Even a driver who is clearly not primarily at fault should take a serious-injury accident seriously from the first hour, including contacting a lawyer if charges look likely.
